One of the amazing things about Indonesia and it's culture is the long tradition of alternative traditional medicine; called Jamu. Jamu is the name for alternative or traditional medicine in Indonesia and Malaysia. Jamu is said to have originated in the Mataram Kingdom some 1300 years ago. This hubpage is dedicated to providing information on Jamu, it's uses, components, ingredients and interesting aspects of it's use. Where possible free downloads of information on Jamu and traditional Indonesian music will also be provided.

It is interesting to note that although Jamu is heavily influenced by Ayurveda from India, many aspects of Jamu tradition are pur Indonesian. Indonesia is a vast archipelago with numerous indigenous plants not found in India, and include plants similar to Australia beyond the Wallace Line. Jamu may vary from region to region, and often not written down, especially in remote areas of the country.

JamuĀ  alternative, traditional medicine is, in fact, the unique herbal remedies from Indonesia, which evidently potent to cure anything for many centuries.

The name of 'Jamu'
Javanese calls Jamu for herbal remedies, without chemist material as additive. Jamu has traditional connotation, because Jamu is ancient tradition, before modern pharmacology comes in Indonesia. Some formulas are over a hundred years old and are stillĀ  considered as relevant and potent today as they were at their inception.

'Dukun' or 'tabib', a traditional doctor have been introducing Jamu for help in treating medical, mental and even sexual airments since ancient times. With the support, promotion and advise of Dukun the drinking Jamu tradition has been popular in common people. And now, almost 80% of Indonesian people still consume Jamu from time to time. For Indonesian people, Jamu is as popular as milk is for people in western countries.
